Judge Issues Warrant For Rapper Azealia Banks' Arrest

| by Denise Recalde

A Manhattan judge issued a bench warrant for rap star Azealia Banks' arrest after she failed to appear in court on Mar. 6.

Banks, 25, is accused of having bitten and punched a female security guard's breast at New York nightclub Up & Down in 2015, the Daily Mail reports.

According to Page Six, her lawyer showed up in Manhattan Criminal Court and relayed a note written by Banks which read: “I can be back tomorrow if the court needs it."

In a statement, her entertainment lawyer explained that Banks mixed up the court dates, PitchFork reports.

"Azealia Banks mistakenly believed she had a court appearance on March 8th instead of March 6th," the lawyer wrote.

"She was in France for Fashion week due to meetings and other social gatherings and was not able to arrange her flight in time to appear today.

"She apologizes and will apologize in person to the Court for missing her scheduled hearing. In addition, she attempted to appear via a New York Attorney and through a close family member," the statement reveals.

It was further added to the statement: "Ms. Banks will go to the department to remedy the situation as soon as possible. Again, she apologizes for the inconvenience that may have caused the Department."

The female rapper must address charges of attempted assault, misdemeanor assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.

On Dec. 16, 2015, Banks was reportedly denied entry to an invitation-only party held downstairs at the New York club for not having an entry stamp.

She was told to get a stamp from club managers "upstairs." When she reacted angrily, two bouncers -- one male and one female -- appeared and did not recognize her.

Banks then tried to explain "who she was, that she's on Rihanna's album."

The bouncers and Banks got into a heated discussion which prompted the bouncers to escort the singer out of the club.

"She [bit] the [female guard] in the breast, almost breaking her shirt," said a source at the time.

The bite "caused swelling and redness," a police source said, Mirror reports. The injured bouncer did not accept medical help at the scene.

Banks also reportedly spat in the female bouncer's face.

The rapper was reportedly "screaming at the top of her lungs" and "cursing" but was subsequently released.

The Harlem-raised celebrity is no stranger to controversy, reports Billboard. She allegedly got into a scuffle at actor Russell Crowe's party in October.
