Savannah Ramirez, 19, Accidentally Kills Brother Manuel Ortiz While Posing with Gun

| by

A Phoenix woman accidentally shot her brother dead while holding a gun to his head and posing for a Facebook photo. Her brother, 22-year-old Manuel Ortiz, died instantly.

Savannah Ramirez, 19, and her brother were out all night drinking on New Year’s Eve when the two returned home shortly before 6 a.m. After the two began posing for gun-toting Facebook photos, Ortiz was shot and killed, according to the police. ABC15 reports that two other people were with the siblings when Ramirez and Ortiz were posing with the gun right before it went off.

Ramirez will likely be charged with manslaughter if tests show she was drinking that night, according to Phoenix Police Sergeant Steve Martos.

“Every New Year’s Eve, this particular sister is going to be thinking about this for the rest of her life on how ... drinking overnight, playing with a gun and now shoots and kills her brother,” said Martos.

An anonymous friend described Ortiz as kind and funny. “Every time he saw somebody sad or down he would be right there making jokes so you could be happy. Even if he was just having a hard time he was always there for someone,” the friend said.

Both Facebook pages of Ortiz and Ramirez show other photos of the two posing with guns and making gang symbols.
