Police in Baltimore arrested the parents of a baby in connection with his death.

Matthew and Anne Kirsch were charged on Oct. 30 with murder, child abuse, neglect and assault-related charges of their 9-day-old son, according to WBAL.

Authorities said officers were called to the family's home on Oct. 20 on a report of an unresponsive child.

The baby, who was also named Matthew Kirsch, was transported to Sinai Hospital, where he died.

The infant's parents told police they found the baby unresponsive, but an autopsy revealed the causes of death to be homicide by blunt-force trauma and neglect.

"It's really even tough to find words to describe what this 9-day-old child had to endure during his very short life," Detective Jeremy Silbert said.

The Medical Examiner's Office report said the "child was a road map of abuse and neglect," and his stomach only contained gastric fluid. This indicates the baby was not being fed.

The report also found an injury in the back of the boy's head consistent with being thrown onto a flat surface.

Investigators believe the infant was subjected to neglect and abuse in his short life. Police claimed they found signs the child suffered from dehydration and malnutrition.

The charging documents held the couple responsible for the conditions that killed the child. The documents also said both parents are addicted to heroin, and that Anne Kirsch admitted she used heroin while she was pregnant.

Both were being held at Central Booking, reports WBAL.

According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, in 2011 the U.S. had 742,000 confirmed incidents of child maltreatment. The organization reported an estimated 1,520 children died due to abuse in 2013.
