An Ohio doctor was charged on Wednesday for drugging, raping and murdering 23-year-old Deanna Ballman, who was nine months pregnant at the time. Her body was found stuffed in the back seat of her car.

Ali Salim, 44, was indicted by a Delaware County grand jury on 9 felony counts including: two counts of murder for the killing of Ballman and her unborn child, rape, kidnapping, corrupting another with drugs, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence.

Ballman was missing less than 48 hours when her body was found. The coroner’s report shows she died of acute heroin intoxication. Codeine, another opiate, was also found in her urine. Both Ballman and her fetus were otherwise healthy. With no history of substance use, investigators and her family treated her death as suspicious.

“We hope today is the beginning of some form of closure for this family and their loved ones,” said Delaware County Sheriff Russ Martin calling the murders a “horrific crime.”

Ballman’s relatives say she left her two children, ages 1 and 3, with her mother in Pataskala to go to a house-cleaning job in New Albany that she had found listed online. Her mother Lori Ballman claims her daughter called to tell her she wasn’t feeling well and then the call was dropped.

Arrested in his home, Salim is now in jail awaiting his arraignment scheduled for Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for Knox Community Hospital where Salim once worked, stated that he was off the job for more than 6 weeks at the time when police discovered Ballman’s body. Ohio state licensure information states Salim is from Pakistan and graduate there from King Edward Medical University in 1993.
