Ohio Couple Admits Putting Children in Plastic Boxes as Punishment

| by

An Ohio couple pleaded guilty Tuesday to putting their three children in plastic storage boxes as a form of punishment on June 16.

The boxes were sealed with duct tape and had a square cut out of the top so the children could breathe.

The children were 5, 6, and 8, and were put in the boxes as punishment at the family's home in Steubenville. While the kids were in the boxes, the parents went to the grocery store. Two uncles were at home with the children until a family friend came to the house, let the children out and called the police.

James Taylor, the father, was charged with two counts of child endangerment and one count of unlawful restraint. Taylor's plea deal calls for one year in jail. Wife Samantha Taylor, who is the children's stepmother, pleaded guilty to the same charges and will likely have two years of probation.

The two uncles, who were involved in helping the parents create the punishment boxes, pleaded guilty to unlawful restraint and have been sentenced to a year of probation.

All three children were in their boxes for 15 to 30 minutes. Though the court believes that the children had not been put in the boxes before, prosecutor Jeffrey Bruzzese said the boxes were just one of the many abusive punishments the parents implemented. One punishment included having weights dropped on the children's feet.

Bruzzese also explained that water had likely been dumped on top of the children while they were in the boxes.

Now living with relatives, the children are doing well.

A sentencing date for the couple has not been set.
