NYPD Questions 7-Year-Old Boy Wilson Reyes for 10 Hours About Stolen $5

article image

After being accused of taking $5 from another student in an after-school swipe, a 7-year-old Bronx boy was pulled out of his classroom and questioned for more than 10 hours.

According to a $250 million claim that has been filed against the city and the NYPD, police handcuffed and held Wilson Reyes in a room at his school for four hours before taking him to the 44th Precinct station house for another six hours of interrogation and verbal abuse.

Reyes’ mother Frances Mendez said: “My son was crying, ‘Mommy, it wasn’t me! Mommy, it wasn’t me!’ I never imagined the cops could do that to a child. We’re traumatized. Imagine how I felt seeing my son in handcuffs! It was horrible. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

The police were supposedly acting because of a report that the $5 in question had fallen on the ground in front of Reyes and two other boys, and one of them pocketed the cash.

Reyes was accused of scooping it, and he and another one of the kids got into a physical altercation. The filed claim states that one of the other boys, not Reyes, admitted to taking the money.

The city’s Law Department wound up dropping the robbery charge against Wilson on Dec. 26. A department spokesman declined to comment yesterday.

The legal papers say another classmate later admitted the theft.

The lawyer for Reyes’ family, Jack Yankowitz, was extremely critical of the actions of police. “It’s unfathomable, what the police did. The whole thing sounds so stupid. They were interrogating him like he was a hardened criminal,” he said. “If you have a child, a nephew, can you even imagine this happening to them?”

The law department for the city dropped the robbery charge against Reyes just after Christmas.

Compared to the lawsuit

Compared to the lawsuit involving hot coffee & big bux, it seems like 250 billion ought to jest about cover it!

The hot coffee suit involved

The hot coffee suit involved someone receiving third degree burns and medical bills for them that exceeded $10k. This case is a little smaller in stature, with its missing $5 and injured feelings.

It's a good thing the kid was

It's a good thing the kid was only 7. If he was any older the cops would have probably beaten him half to death and then shot him and said he was trying to escape. And they wonder why people call them pigs?

According to more reliable

According to more reliable reports, this "story" is a bogus exaggeration created & spread to the media by Reyes lawyer. http://m.nydailynews.com/1.1250928

The police dropped the robbery charge, but not the charge of assault. Wilson Reyes is a violent bully who has repeatedly been victimizing one fellow school mate for some time. This time Reyes bloodied this other child and took his money just after leaving school grounds. The real victim's Mother, who had repeatedly filed complaints with the school, called the police who met with the 2 boys, school officials, the witnesses and the parents at the school. After taking witness statements and getting a signed complaint charge, Reyes, accompanied by his Mother, was taken to the police station for booking. In New York a child can be arrested as a juvenile offender from age 7-17. 7-year old Reyes was questioned & booked in the presence of his Mother, fed pizza and spent a total of 4 1/2 hours at a police station where he WAS charged. The fact that his Mother was present the entire time, could have stopped all questioning at anytime, as well as the fact her son was treated "by the book" & on camera through each step of the proceedings (including being handcuffed as is required by law), then released in his Mother's custody pending his day in court, there is NO basis for a lawsuit against the police. Reyes lawyers are simply hoping to ignite public outrage before all the facts come out in the hope the NYPD will offer a quick settlement.

In my opinion Francis Mendez is an unfit Mother who ignored the school's complaints about her violent son and should be put under investigation by the Dept of Child Services. I would like to see all negligent parents prosecuted for the crimes they allow their children to repeatedly commit on the public. My sympathies are for the unnamed child Wilson Reyes beat & bullied, and for this real victim's Mother who could not get the school to take action against Reyes.

The new evil, as created by

The new evil, as created by the media and the liberal elites, is the Bully. Now, as a seven year old, a kid characterized as a bully should be handcuffed and arrested, booked and cuffed to a stationary object at the station, while being interrogated for four hours, and all this is perfectly OK, because the story goes, "he's a bully!" I'm sure it would also be OK, if he was a homophobe or a racist...Why are people so quick to allow such outrages when it involves those they disagree with? He's seven years old and he wasn't even the kid that took the money!

Yeah! Why should we help

Yeah! Why should we help protect a child from another classmate after being made fun of and beaten? If the kid's afraid to go to school that's his problem to work out. His school can fix the problem, as schools are so well known for doing, and successfully, by suspending the child who was defending himself. Since you know, the bully is obviously just problem solving here, trying to fix their relationship, make a connection but that damn victim just won't be a big enough person to put in the effort, obviously!

Freedom of speech means I can punch and harass whoever, whenever I want! To stop me is unconstitutional! If I want to call another person a racist or sexist term until they are uncomfortable and feel emotionally abused and physical hurt them, no one should intervene. I'm not a bully, we're just "working a problem out ourselves". Who cares if that kid later has 'personally issues' after feeling unwanted, unneeded, and lonely from being abused by classmates for 10 years, the good news is I'M OK. I'm also sick of those damn liberals having sympathy for suicidal school children.

Yeah. That mother should get used to seeing her kid in handcuffs. If at 7 he's blooding classmates and taking their money despite his best friend saying "We shouldn't do this, we could go to jail for this" well, mamma, you screwed up. I guess she forgot to mention stealing and hitting is wrong, or he missed that episode of Blues Clues, or never saw the 10 commandments, or the rules or the wall in first grade, etc, etc, etc.

The bully is not a new evil

The bully is not a new evil created by anybody. Bullies have been around a long time, and are finally being called out for their actions. Those being bullied can finally get their "day in court". The bullies finally are getting their "just deserts" and are getting upset because they are no longer getting their way unchallenged. Who's crying now?

The robbery charges were

The robbery charges were dropped, but the assault charges stand. He allegedly attacked another child.

If it is true that he has be picking on another child and things have escalated to the point where he physically assaulted that child to rob him, then maybe being arrested was just what he needed. If the mother has escalated all this without legitimate reason, then sadly all she has done is reinforce her child's belief that one can bully and assault others without consequence if you know how to work the system.

Yeah, those are the details I

Yeah, those are the details I read. The only discretion I can find is the length of time the mother had to wait to see her son. One report she said she waited 40 minutes, another she said it was hours. The police say as soon as she got there she was allowed to see him.

If the boy was arrested for punching another boy in the face, I think the police did the right thing. It's still assault even if he's only 7. Hopefully this experience plus some sort of talk therapy or anger management suited for a child will turn this boy into a fine young man.

Welcome to Adolph Bloomberg's

Welcome to Adolph Bloomberg's new NYC Nazi regime. NYC Police should wear long black leather coats like the Gestapo in Germany did during WWII.

Bloomberg and Cumo are sadistic sick fu*king morons. How did these people get elected? Oh I forgot they are part of the 5% who own all the money. Not one single gun control law has stopped criminals and the rise in gun related crimes. These people surrond themselves with body guards who are armed to the teeth but no one else can own a gun. Sounds Like George Orwell's "Animal Farm' to me. I think they should take all the guns that have been turned in and dump them all right in the streets for the criminals to have. Then let them kill each other off. Shoot those who are left and then return the guns to their rightful owners with a new cleaning kit and some Hoppe's Solvent.

Hi, gang. To those of you

Hi, gang. To those of you thinking this amount $250m is outrageous, hold on. First, this is only the first step, filing the suit. I'm sure they probably tried to file a tort claim with thge school district and the police department and were turned down. 2nd thing they do is to then file a law suit. That gets the parties to the bargaining table to work on a settlement. Doubtful the school district or the police wan a suit going to court. The police dropped the charges, which goes a long way when another child admitted the theft. That makes the police look like they are culpable, making them guilty of overstepping their bounds. The school district, they are really not wanting to get this to court. I expect a settlement would likely be less than a million, and the funds would be put in trust for the boy. He is going to be very traumatized, and the funds would help to get him much needed counseling. That's much more reasonable and likely outcome. The school distric should be ashamed of themselves, have they lost their minds?? That principal should be fired, if nothing else, for allowing this to even happen is way beyond comprehension.
