A New York mother was arrested and charged with second-degree murder Tuesday for the death of her 11-month-old son.

Nicole Kelly, 22, allegedly put the child under the sheets and watched him suffocate before leaving him alone for about half an hour. When she returned, her son was no longer moving and his face was blue, officials said.

The mother lived in Queens with her son in an apartment building. Kelly’s landlady allegedly found the baby dead on a bed in the home dressed in a completely white outfit, according to the Inquisitr.

“I thought he was going to get a baptism or something. He was dressed all in white,” the landlady told 1010 WINS radio. “I checked his pulse, but he didn’t have a pulse. He was already cold and pale.”

After the landlord called authorities, the child’s father came to the apartment and took him to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Kelly allegedly told police that she no longer wanted her baby and had reached a “breaking point” when she let him suffocate.

“She basically admitted to intentionally suffocating the child,” officials said.

According to Kelly’s Facebook page, she regretted her actions.

“Missing my baby boy so much wishing there was some way I could bring him back to life I feel horrible knowing he passed away Am his mother I was supposed to protect him I know his spirit will always be around me and I would never forget my 1st Born he will forever remain in my heart & his family hearts,” she wrote.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Kelly is now facing serious charges for the crime, CBS New York reported.

“This is a truly disturbing case of a mother accused of intentionally killing her helpless 11 month-old infant son,” Brown said.

If convicted, Kelly could be sentenced 25 years to life in prison.
