New Orleans Daycare Owner Sued For Stabbing Mother With Letter Opener

The owner of a day care in New Orleans says she was trying to protect the children when she stabbed a rowdy mother in the head and hand with a letter opener.

The owner of Love Me Tender Learning Academy told police that 24-year-old Sharnekia Simmons began “fighting” with her Wednesday when she arrived late to drop off her 1-year-old. Simmons allegedly tried to force her way inside the daycare and refused to leave.

“I felt like, ‘OK, this is a violent woman I'm dealing with. I have to protect these children, and I have to protect my staff,'” the owner said. “I had the letter opener in my hand, and naturally I'm going to defend myself, and I fought back."

Simmons says she was 15 minutes late. It was the second time she was late in two days, and the owner was unwilling to make another exception.

"We were fighting, and all of a sudden, I didn't even notice my finger was hanging off," Simmons told WDSU. "I had got stabbed. I didn't notice until I saw the blood coming from (my head). You know, cause I got stabbed in my head too. I got staples."

There were about 20 kids in the daycare when the stabbing occurred. Part of the incident was caught on video surveillance.

"She was saying, ‘I'm going to kill you,’” said Simmons. “And I'm backing up, and she's running after me."

“She just would not leave. No matter what I said, she would not leave,” said the owner.

Simmons is suing the daycare owner for pain and suffering.

The owner also sustained a cut to her hand. She refused medical attention when paramedics arrived at the scene. It appears the owner was not charged with any crime.
