New Mexico Man Arrested On Child Pornography Charge After He Tipped Off Police

An unusual arrest occurred in Albuquerque Saturday after a 20-year-old man tipped off police by sending them a message saying he planned to abuse a 6-year-old girl.

Randy Martinez has been accused of possessing and distributing large quantities of child pornography.

“[The suspect said] that he was going to rape a 6-year-old that he was going to babysit,” said Kyle Hartsock, a police officer with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, according to KOAT.

Martinez left a fake name in the tip he posted on Aug. 17, but did provide an accurate address and age in the message. Police obtained a search warrant and visited the property later that day, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

Officers waited for around an hour until the occupants returned to the home. They said that a girl matching the description in Martinez’s message lived at the residence. She was the granddaughter of a woman Martinez’s father was dating.

Martinez denied everything when questioned by Hartsock, but he admitted his guilt after Hartsock searched the web history on his phone. The phone allegedly included over 1,400 files of child pornography.

“It’s a very unusual situation,” Hartsock told the Journal on Sunday. “He used a medium that is there to report sex offenses but used it on himself. It looks like he turned himself in, but he wasn’t necessarily trying to. He wanted to start a back-and-forth cat-and-mouse game to try get caught and leave letters and clues and taunt law enforcement.”

Asked why he had sent the police a tip, Martinez reportedly said he wanted to play a game, like in a movie.

“He said he was feeling very depressed and wanted to get caught, but he didn’t think he’d be found that fast and that he was hoping investigators would have to work harder to find him,” Hartsock wrote in a criminal complaint against Martinez, according to the Journal.

Hartsock stated that the investigation is continuing. Martinez refused to admit to abusing the young girl, but police believe he may have more victims because of the information he wrote in the tip.

Martinez was charged twice as a juvenile for sex offenses against children.

He is currently being held on $30,000 bond.
