A 17-year-old New Jersey teen is in stable condition after he shot himself in the face during a game of Russian Roulette.

The boy and a 15-year-old friend were walking home at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday when they came upon a gun in a vacant lot. According to NBC, police identified the gun as a .38-caliber handgun. The teenagers picked up the gun and walked to the 15-year-old girl’s house. Neither of the teens told her parents about the gun, and they went to the bathroom to play a game of Russian Roulette.

Moments later, the boy came running out of the bathroom bleeding profusely. Residents at the apartment complex called police after hearing a gun shot. The teen initially fled the scene, but he returned 45 minutes later with a legal guardian to turn himself over to the police. The teen claims he threw the gun in a trash can across the street after he ran out of the house, but police did not find the weapon.

The 17-year-old now faces a slew of charges for his ill-advised self-shooting. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.
