Steven Ayers, his wife, Jessica, and other family members were welcoming home their 3-day-old baby in Panama City, Fla., on Tuesday night when tragedy struck.
During the festivities, Ayers, 33, was suddenly hit in the back of the head by a stray bullet and died instantly.
The bullet was allegedly fired by Ayers' neighbor Charles Shisler, who picked up his loaded 9mm handgun by the trigger, reports the News Herald of Panama.
According to the police report, Shisler was initially “extremely belligerent” with Bay County Sheriff’s Office deputies, and seemed to blame the gun.
“The damn gun doesn’t usually shoot,” Shisler reportedly told the deputies. “You have to squeeze the hell out of the trigger to shoot it.”
According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, the bullet traveled through Shisler’s screen, an open window, 60 feet of woods and into the Ayers’ home.
“The odds, I’d guess, are one-in-infinity,” said Bay County Sheriff's Deputy Tommy Ford. “This was just tragic.”
Shisler, who has a felony conviction for carrying a concealed firearm from 2006, was charged with manslaughter and being a felon in possession of a gun, notes the Miami Herald.
