A Greenville, South Carolina, woman was found dead in her home on Jan. 2 after reportedly sitting in the same chair for six months.

Family members found 82-year-old Barbara Ann Beam sitting in a chair in a bedroom of the home she shared with two relatives, reported WYFF. Authorities concluded that based on the condition of both Beam’s body and the chair, she had been sitting in the same position for an extended length of time, reports AP. Her legs were reportedly still bent in a sitting position after she was removed from the chair.

“Beam’s sister told police she had been checking on her sister throughout the night, and when she woke up in the morning, she tried to give Beam some water, but she was unable to swallow it,” WYFF reported.

“She said she put some ice chips in Beam’s mouth and continued to check on her until she went to watch a soap opera at about noon. The sister said she found Beam slumped over a short time later and could find no pulse.” Beam’s sister admitted to police that the woman remained in the chair for six months.

Beam’s death was, according to an autopsy, the result of a blood clot that formed from the amount of time she stayed in the chair. The death was ruled a homicide by neglect, though it is still under investigation and charges have yet to be filed.
