A mother dropped her 15-year-old daughter off at an Atlanta hospital earlier this month, reportedly saying she “could not do it anymore.”
The girl, whom doctors believe has autism or another learning disability, was reportedly beaten and starved until she weighed only 60 pounds.
Doctors said that the girl had cuts and bruises consistent with beatings. According to the police report, she also had pressure sores that suggested that she had been kept in a small place for a long time.
When police went to investigate the girl’s parents’ home, they made a shocking discovery: officers found a tiny room containing a 2ft by 2ft mat, which they believe is what the girl was forced to live on.
Although the family had only lived in the home for a matter of weeks, they found that the room was filled with “some clothes that were stained with feces and urine.”
“There were actually feces on the floor and the entire room smelled of feces and urine,” said Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter.
The 35-year-old mother, Jade Marie Jacobs, was arrested on malicious child cruelty. Authorities are still searching for her husband, 40-year-old William Brown. Authorities believe Brown to be the girl’s stepfather.
Authorities found three other girls, ages nine, 11 and 13, living in the home. Although none of the girls showed signs of abuse, they are all reported to have been taken in by social services.
Although Jacobs said that the girl’s low weight was due to a refusal to eat, nurses reportedly noted that the girl was desperate to eat.
According to MailOnline, Jacobs was charged with child abuse, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment in 2000 after she put her baby in hot bath water.
