A South Carolina mother has been arrested and jailed for leaving her 9-year-old daughter at a park unsupervised. What was once a common practice for parents (in the summertime especially) has now turned into grounds for imprisonment.
Debra Lynn Harrell, 46, was officially booked on charges of unlawful neglect toward a child and her daughter was taken into custody by the Department of Social Services, reports Police State USA.
Officers in North Augusta, S.C., responded to a phone call on Monday around 2:00 p.m. from a neighbor alerting them that Debra's daughter had been playing alone at a park near her house since 9:30 a.m. The woman also told authorities that this was a common practice, and that Ms. Harrell dropped her daughter off at the park often and would leave her there for hours.
According to the child, who was interviewed by police, her mother sometimes drops her off at the park while on the way to work. Ms. Harrell would leave her daughter with some money to buy lunch from the Wal-Mart across the street, then pick her up after work.
According to local news station WFXG, "Officers took the girl to police headquarters and contacted her mother. Harrell confessed to officers that she left her daughter alone at the park. She was arrested and booked into jail."
