A 38-year-old Louisiana woman was arrested Monday for allegedly putting her four-month-old baby in an ice chest with a gas can and closing the lid.

Witnesses told police they saw Jami Jo Ranson of Ponchatoula, who did nothing as the infant “continuously screamed,” according to the Huffington Post. It was just after midnight on Aug. 2.

One witness, fearing for the child’s life, rescued the baby and called police.

The infant was taken to a local hospital and released unharmed.

Baton Rouge Police arrested Ranson on probable cause and charged her with child desertion. While in police custody, controlled prescription drugs were found on her person, leading to additional charges filed against her.

“It’s hard to say if she had a prescription or not,” police spokesperson Don Copolla told WAFB. “Who knows what else she may have been going through to think to put her child in the ice chest and close the lid.”

She is being held on $10,000 bond.

The baby is now in the custody of child protective services.
