Michigan's Anti-Bullying Law will Not Include Religious Exemption

article image

By Joseph L. Conn

Good news from Michigan! The state legislature is moving toward anti-bullying legislation that does not include an exemption for religiously motivated harassment.

As we reported to you earlier, the state Senate passed a measure to deal with bullying in public schools. But, remarkably, senators included an exemption for those who act out of “sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction.”

The action sparked outrage in Michigan and across the country. Most saw it for what it was: a deplorable attempt to allow bullying of LGBT kids and other minorities as long as the perpetrator was quoting Leviticus.

The House bill drew condemnation from leaders in the civil rights, civil liberties and progressive religious communities.

For example, Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, senior religion editor for the Huffington Post, wrote, “As we have become painfully aware in the last year, there is an epidemic of bullying across the country that has made laws like the one Michigan is working on so important. Too often, the victim is perceived as LGBT identified – whether they are in reality or not….The idea that religious beliefs require special provision within a law meant to protect the most vulnerable should be an affront to all religious people. It is an affront to me as a Baptist minister. The bill intimates that we people of faith require special loopholes for our irresistible urges to bully people based on our very, very sincerely held beliefs. Ridiculous.”

Raushenbush concluded, “Any anti-bullying legislation must be the same for all people. Get rid of the loophole for religious beliefs. It is insulting and wrong.”

Even TV comedian Stephen Colbert weighed in, commenting tongue-in-(right-wing)-cheek, “Bullying is just fine, as long as you get a permission slip from God."

Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed in the Michigan House, and the anti-bullying bill passed there did not include the religion exemption.

After the national uproar, things are even looking up in the state Senate. According to theReligion News Service, State Sen. Rick Jones (R – Grand Ledge) – who sponsored the exemption – on Monday agreed to the House approach.

Jones said he intended his exemption as a protection of free speech, not an excuse for bullying. And he said he will urge his fellow Republican senators to vote for the cleaned-up proposal.

Good.

The likely outcome in Michigan shows that the forces of civility, equality and fairness can win. We just have to speak out forcefully, and let our elected representatives know where we stand.

Do you people ever stay on topic?

You can not legislate care. These laws will protect no one. They'll only harm.

CRW's picture

You couldn't be more wrong.

You couldn't be more wrong. Make your case why this law will do more harm over letting things stay as they are. I think incidents like Columbine make the case very strong for anti-bullying laws.

Why do you claim I'm wrong

Why do you claim I'm wrong and then ask why? You already made up your mind. Making a discussion pointless from a sensible position. You believe schools had laws that advocated bullying? As in saying it was okay.

CRW's picture

I am open to be convinced

I am open to be convinced that anti-bullying laws could do more harm. I am saying "make that case." Right now, the number one cause of teen suicide is bullying. Schools are not paying adequate attention to bullying, so it is time to add to the legal remedies to ensure they do. Please make your case why such a law would do more harm than allowing bullying to continue as it does today unabated. For many districts, bullying is all but ignored as "boys will be boys" or "girls will be girls."

So you trolling far and wide with the same name is somehow proof that I am hiding since I use a single name here at OV? I am not all over the net. I comment on maybe 5 different, mostly unrelated boards. I use a new username for each. That is simply good internet security practice. People that use the same username or their real identity are taking a dumb risk.

Weather or not your other personalities agree with you (Yes you are all those other people like CRW and Chuck until proven otherwise). So says the liar who is hiding something. I sent an email to the admin

I sent an email to the admin here about j-jammer. They said they are investigating. As long as people respond to him, he is drumming up views and so he is helping OV out. So, j-jammer's trolling is perfect for them, as long as we respond. If he actually seems to drive people away, then that is bad for OV. Does my logic seem sound? So perhaps the best course is to abandon any thread that j-jammer is on, and then he will be seen as a traffic killer. Then claims that he is driving people off will be sound. Although, given OV's support, moderation, and how well the site works; I doubt anything will ever come of it and JJ can troll here forever.

JJ, I doubt you can express

JJ, I doubt you can express why you think we are hiding something in a concise and clear way. So, you using similar user names on 100s of sites to do your thing is not being anonymous. No, you are anonymous but leaving a paper trail of what you do attached to your username. Now, because someone here does not have a huge amount of baggage attached to their user name and notices that you do, do you feel this means something is being hidden? That is perverse reasoning. The observations you have made are equally consistent with all of us having nothing to hide but noticing that your behavior is odd and easily finding that it is widespread and that we are not the first to notice. The only possible defensible logic behind your assertion here seems some deep grasp of human psychology where everyone who makes an allegation is secretly guilty of the same or worse. This is nonsensical.

You just look for what you want, not what is out there. You're trying to scare me and liars don't scare me. Especially ones that have to hide. And now you're trying to do some philosophical liberal atheist talking as if it's smart. It's cute. seen it before. But others do it much better. You're need to stalk me is nonsensical. You want there to be something bad. Found nothing, therefore have to lie. And you have two other accounts on this website. Why is that? Your research isn't done. There's way more websites out there, but you only need the ones that you think make me look bad. Bias is an atheist's way, but you touted to be more than that. Guess when you have two other accounts you created to agree with you, you don't need to be that smart with facts.

The Michigan house, senate

The Michigan house, senate and governor are republican. The state government in Michigan has never been as conservative as it is now. The anti-bullying law is intended to force schools to take action in ways that they had not been doing up to now. Kids deserve to be safe from harassment in school. That's not a liberal idea or a conservative idea, that's a good idea. What problem could you possibly have forcing schools to address bullying? This law includes protecting very religious students who are frequently bullied for being "jesus freaks." This law is simply requiring that michigan schools enforce a live and let live environment in school. No one can be singled out for harassment. The law would protect all students. The religious exception that some lawmakers tried to insert should serve as evidence of how conservative some Michigan legislators have become.

You really are nothing but a stupid troll.
