A 14-month-old Michigan boy is now in the hospital fighting for his life after his father’s girlfriend reportedly beat him out of jealousy.

The girlfriend, 37-year-old Hilary Ulp, was the person who called 911 on Friday. First responders rushed to the Eastpointe, Michigan, home where the boy, Nicholas Kuras, lives with his father Kevin.

The child’s mother died last year.

“The baby was pretty unresponsive, so it was a sad situation,” Kinita McDaniel, a neighbor, told ABC News.

Eric Keiser, Deputy Chief of the Eastpointe Police Department, said the paramedics were suspicious of child abuse when they arrived at the scene. Nicholas had sustained multiple injuries including severe head trauma. Investigators believe Nicholas was actually hurt on Thursday evening and went without treatment until the following day, according to ABC News.

Police believe the motivation behind the attack was jealousy, which is an assumption made based on Mr Kuras’ statement.

Ulp was arraigned Monday on a charge of first degree child abuse, CBS Detroit reports. When asked by a judge if she wanted to say anything in regards to bond, Ulp replied that she didn’t mean to hurt the baby and that she loved him like her own. When she insisted that she had to get out of jail to take care of her own child, the judge interrupted her and set her bond at $500,000 cash.

If convicted, Ulp could face life in prison. She is currently being held in Macomb County Jail.

The boy was last reported in critical condition, according to CBS Detroit.
