Michael Brown’s mother, Lesley McSpadden, could be facing legal trouble. Last month, we reported that McSpadden was allegedly involved in an assault on people who were selling t-shirts with her deceased son’s likeness, including her son’s grandmother.
The Ferguson Police Department is investigating claims that McSpadden brought a mob to confront people who were selling Michael Brown merchandise, just blocks from where the teen was slain. Brown’s grandmother, Pearlie Gordon, along with Brown’s cousin Tony Petty, were reportedly selling their goods when they were attacked.
The new police report said 20-30 people “jumped out of vehicles and rushed” Gordon and Petty. McSpadden reportedly yelled “You can’t sell this s***!” Gordon allegedly responded by telling the grief-stricken mother that she would keep selling the shirts unless McSpadden could prove she had a "patent" on Michael Brown’s name and likeness.
During the altercation, someone beat Petty with a metal pipe so badly that 911 was called and he was rushed to Christian Northeast Hospital. Gordon was allegedly shoved several times. After the violence ended, more than $1,500 in merchandise and $400 in cash was allegedly stolen by the attackers.

At the time of the incident, Fox 2 reporters reached out to Brown’s family attorney, Anthony D. Gray, to ask about the fight between Brown’s relatives, but he declined to comment. Once the police investigation is concluded, local authorities will decide whether or not to charge McSpadden for her alleged involvement.
Prior to the fight, McSpadden had asked people not to exploit her son’s death for personal gain. 18-year-old Michael Brown was unarmed when he was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson on August 9.
Ferguson, Missouri has been in turmoil since Brown was killed. A grand jury is expected to announce whether or not Darren Wilson will be facing criminal charges soon.
