The man who admitted in a YouTube video to hitting and killing a person while driving drunk was handed his prison sentence today.

22-year-old Matthew Cordle, of Colombus, Ohio posted a YouTube video in June admitting he was guilty of killing 61-year-old Vincent Canzani. Several days after posing the video, Cordle surrendered to authorities and was charged vehicular manslaughter.

Today, Cordle was sentenced to six and a half years in prison. Six years are for aggravated vehicular homicide and six months are for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several people spoke at today’s hearing, including Cordle, his father Dave Cordle, and Angela Canzani, the victim’s daughter.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

"My father got a death sentence, six-and-a-half years is nothing," said Angela Canzani. "After six-and-a-half years, Matthew Cordle will have his life back -- my father is never coming back."

Dave Cordle told the court that his son’s decision to drive on June 22nd left him “disgusted, disappointed, and heartbroken.” He added that he hopes the Canzani family can one day forgive his son.

Cheryl Canzani Oates, the victim’s ex-wife, wrote a letter that was read aloud during the hearing.

“Nothing will bring Vincent back," Oates said in the letter. "I know what pain Matthew feels. The pain will stay with him until his death."

Matthew Cordle was the final person to speak before the sentence was handed down. He apologized again for his actions and admitted that no prison sentence will ever make right his decision to drive that night.

"It should have been me instead of an innocent man. I vow that I'll do everything I can to prevent it from happening again and his memory from fading,” he said. “Whatever my sentence may be, there's no fair sentence when it comes to the loss of a life.”
