A North Carolina Marine recruiter has been charged with assaulting two young recruits after allegations of sexual misconduct came to light. Derek Craig Percival, a sergeant in the Marine Corps, is currently in jail on charges of attempted second-degree rape, involuntary servitude, sexual battery and communicating threats.
Percival, 24, is alleged to have committed the assaults on the young recruits, one of whom is only 17, both at the Marine recruitment office where he works as well as at his the apartment he shares with his wife and two children.
The 17-year-old, who has not been named, said she had met Percival four or five times to discuss joining the Marine Corps. After going to Percival’s apartment last Saturday night, she and other recruits stayed over after they were unable to get a ride home. She alleges that early Sunday morning Percival forced her to have oral sex with him and said that he would kill her if she told anyone. Percival threatened her, “If you don't let me, I'm going to rape you,”’ she told a local television station.
The Marine Corps is cooperating with local police and authorities in the investigation into the crimes. The Corp will also conduct its own internal investigation into the charges leveled at Sergeant Percival.

The number of reported sexual assaults in the military has been on rise lately. At Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas at least a dozen instructors were met with accusations of assaulting recruits back in September. This has led to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ordering a review of all military policies and procedures in an effort to curb the sexual assaults.
