New York man Jason Melo was arrested on Jan. 20 after reportedly choking and beating his girlfriend before forcing her to walk down the street naked (video below).
Melo recorded the public humiliation and then uploaded the video to social media.
Melo, 24, allegedly beat his 22-year-old girlfriend in front of their 3-month-old daughter, before forcing the woman onto the street in a towel, the New York Daily News reports.
Melo is accused of punching the woman in the face and crotch, and threatening to kill her if she didn’t remove her clothes and get out of their New York City apartment.
In video footage of the incident, the woman can be seen wrapped in a towel and being followed by a man who is speaking Spanish. He calls her a “b*tch” and “a tart.” He also states that he caught her talking to seven other men.
“You’re going to pay the price like a whore, right there by the trash,” Melo says. “Pose with your trash.”
The woman then takes cover between two cars, and the man threatens to post the video online.
After the video was uploaded to the Internet, First Lady of New York City Chirlane McCray responded to it.
“The video displayed verbal abuse, forced humiliation, and harassment by the alleged offender, directed at his wife. Posting that video online perpetuated the abuse, which New York City does not tolerate,” McCray said. “Posting that video online perpetuated the abuse, which New York City does not tolerate.
"We are steadfast in our efforts to make sure all victims of abuse are aware of the many resources available as we strive to make New York City's public and private spaces safe for all women and girls.”
The victim was treated for facial injuries.
Melo was awaiting arraignment on charges of choking, child abuse, coercion and assault on Jan. 21.
