An unidentified man entered a jewelry store in the Stamford Mall on Saturday in a wheelchair, but suddenly ran out with one of the store’s watches.
The bizarre robbery was caught on video (below) in the Connecticut area store at around 2:45 p.m.
“It’s a shame that he takes advantage of other people’s other handicaps,” Stamford Police Lt. Diedrich Hohn told CBS New York. “I think they felt a false sense of security because he was in a wheelchair.”
The unidentified man reportedly rolled his wheelchair near a display case of Rolex watches and chatted with a clerk.
The man tried on several watches before appearing to be satisfied with a $27,000 Rolex watch.
He suddenly jumped to his feet, knocked over another clerk and shot pepper spray at the store security guard, according to the police report.
However, the clever crook made a few mistakes.
The Associated Press notes that police say the suspect left his fingerprints on his abandoned wheelchair and left behind his hat, not to mention the video footage that caught him in the act.
