A British man convicted of murdering his 4-year-old stepson was found dead in prison.

Mariusz Krezolek, 36, and his partner Magdalena Luczak were both found guilty in the death of 4-year-old Daniel Pelka in 2013, the Independent reported. Krezolek was found dead at Full Sutton prison in Yorkshire on Jan. 27.

Krezolek’s death comes six months after Luzcak, Daniel’s mother, was found hanging in her prison cell.

In a statement obtained by the Daily Mail, a prison spokesperson said:

HMP Full Sutton prison Mariusz Krezolek was found unresponsive in his cell at 8.30am on Wednesday... Staff immediately attempted resuscitation but he was pronounced dead shortly after. As with all deaths in custody, there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons & Probation Ombudsman.

The case of Daniel’s death made headlines in March 2012 after the child was found dead at his home in Coventry.

Daniel was reportedly starved and resembled a “famine victim” at the time of his death. His weight dropped to an astonishing 22 pounds after six months of abuse and he stood six inches shorter than average.

The child had at least 30 injuries to his body and slept on a urine-soaked mattress, according to court documents. It was an injury to the head that ultimately ended Daniel’s life on March 3, 2012. The couple reportedly left him to die alone, and had sex while he lay unconscious.

The couple blamed each other for Daniel’s head injury. They were both found guilty and sent to jail.

“Your campaign of cruelty, as it has accurately been described, culminated in the severe blow or blows to his head that killed him,” Judge Laura Cox told the couple during their sentencing. “He was just four and a half years old.”

The judge added that the couple subjected the child to “deliberate, escalating and incomprehensible brutality, which continued right up to his death.”
