A Willingboro, New Jersey, man was shot to death by his female friend when attempted to pay her a surprise visit.

On Nov. 17, the 51-year-old woman was on the phone with her friend, 50-year-old Kelvin Watford, when she heard a dog barking and noises outside her Hamilton Township home, NJ.com reports. While still on the phone, she retrieved her gun.

Watford told the woman he was returning from a trip and was not in the immediate area.

“She heard someone inside of her house and walked to her bedroom door, still on the phone,” according to a news release from prosecutors, according to WCAU. “She then opened her bedroom door, observed the shadow of a person in the dark on the stairs, and fired one gunshot.”
