Jermaine Culver, 9, was stabbed three times while walking to school on Friday morning in Staten Island, New York.
A surveillance video (below) shows an unidentified man following Culver down a sidewalk and stabbing him at about 7:42 a.m.
Culver suffered injuries to his neck, arm and head, but was able to get away and run home.
"My mother was crying, you know, like a mother would do," Culver's brother Malik Williams told WABC. "I was shocked. I wouldn't think this would happen to my 9-year-old brother."
Culver was taken to a hospital where doctors stitched him up.
No arrests have been made yet, but the NYPD is searching for a black male who was wearing dark clothing in the Mariners Harbor area of Staten Island.
Staten Island Live notes that the public can call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.
