An intruder with a knife was shot and killed as he attempted to break into the home of a Barelas, New Mexico, man, his pregnant wife and 1-year-old son.

The man, whose identity was not released, killed 43-year-old Willie Amador on Monday around 1 a.m. as he attempted to break into his home. The homeowner reportedly confronted Amador, who was wielding a 6-inch knife, and a fight broke out before the suspect was shot dead in self-defense.

“About 1 o clock, I heard two gunshots come out,” neighbor Lisa Ortiz told KOB-TV. “The next thing I knew, the block was filled with police officers everywhere.”

Police said a woman living at the home, later determined to be the shooter’s pregnant wife, called them to the scene. When officers arrived, Amador was dead and the knife was at his side. Amador had a history of burglary and was believed to have caused another disturbance in the same neighborhood earlier that night. Amador was also previously convicted of escaping jail as well as battery against a household member.

“I think it's just all of Albuquerque. You have to look out for your surroundings, everywhere,” Ortiz said. “There have been robberies around here. You have to always make sure you lock your doors and stuff.”

The homeowner who shot Amador will not, according to police, face any criminal charges for the incident.
