A West Virginia man has been sentenced by a judge to 40 years in jail after viciously abusing his young son, which ultimately ended his life. Prosecutors called the man's son, “the most abused child we’ve ever seen.”
James Mauldin, 22, mercilessly abused his three-year-old son Kaiwon Connelley, and as a result, the young boy died on New Year’s Day in 2012. Earlier this year, Mauldin was officially charged with death of a child by parent by child abuse, child abuse causing serious bodily injury, malicious assault, presentation of false information regarding a child’s injuries and two counts of gross child neglect creating risk of serious bodily injury. Now, a judge has sentenced him to 40 years in prison.
“This was a 3-year-old child that had no one to turn to,” said Berkley County Prosecutor Pamela Games-Neely. “He suffered a horrific death. He was the most abused child we’ve ever seen in the system. This is the most malicious thing I’ve seen in a long time.”
Three-year-old Kaiwon suffered a fractured skull, brain bleeds, and really severe burns that ultimately ended his life. Mauldin’s 25-year-old girlfriend Jasmine Dawkins was also convicted of neglecting the child and will spend the next 11 years behind bars.
Kaiwon’s biological mother reportedly tried to get in touch with him during the time that he was abused, but unfortunately, her reliance on public transportation made that difficult, and she didn't make it to him in time.
