A New York City man was sentenced to 17 years in prison after pleading guilty to beating his 71-year-old nursing home roommate to death with a wheelchair footrest.

Thomas Yarnavick, 67, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter in the beating death of Jailall Singh.

The attack took place at Beacon Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Queens on Oct. 30.

Singh died after being repeatedly struck over the heard with a metal wheelchair footrest, Tidewater Review reports. The bloody footrest was later found in a laundry hamper.

"This was a particularly senseless and disturbing killing of a man living out his days at a nursing facility," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.

Local media reported that the two had argued over privacy leading up to the attack.

The fatal beating was over a curtain that separated their beds, Bellingham Herald reports.
