A man in England was arrested after accidentally sending his girlfriend a video of himself having sex with their dog.

According to reports, 34-year-old David Buchanan decided to engage in sexual intercourse with the pet while watching porn on a tablet. The act was filmed and –unbeknownst to Buchanan – synched to his girlfriend’s phone. When the clip started playing on the woman’s phone, she was horrified and immediately notified police. Buchanan was arrested on March 7 and charged with sexual assault.

In court on Friday, prosecutor Keith Ballinger provided detail of the incident, as well as what led Buchanan to getting caught and subsequently arrested.

“This comes to light because it is reported by his then partner,” Ballinger said. “She was at work on this day and received on her mobile phone a 29 second video clip from a tablet computer. That video showed him having sex with their 10-month-old Rhodesian Ridgeback.

"It appears her mobile phone and the tablet are linked by the Cloud, and it is that way the video was sent to her," he continued. "When arrested he said he knew he had done wrong and it was stupid. He had been at home watching pornography and wondered what it would be like to have sex with the dog.”

Buchanan’s defense lawyer, Ellen McAnaw, argued that Buchanan was simply lonely and had no friends beyond his now-ex girlfriend.

“There is a great deal of embarrassment and shame about what happened,” McAnaw said. “He spends most of his time at home drawing or playing xBox, and he doesn't seem to have any friends outside the previous relationship. He has no support from his family and since the offence [sic] has reduced his cannabis use. He maintains there is a bug on his device which means it randomly starts recording.”

Buchanan was given a 12-week suspended sentence for two years, and was forced to register as a sex offender for seven years. He will also undergo 50 hours of rehabilitation.
