A British man has been sent to jail for reportedly killing his friend because he “poked” his girlfriend on Facebook.
According to the NY Daily News, 27-year-old Scott Humphrey repeatedly punched friend Richard Rovetto during a dispute in which Humphrey asked, “If you're such a good friend why did you poke my missus?”
Humphrey unleashed punch after punch on Rovetto when, eventually, the victim fell back to the ground and hit his head on the pavement. Rovetto died hours later at a hospital, and Humphrey immediately fled the scene after throwing the fatal punch, although he later turned himself into authorities.
Now, Humphrey has been sentenced to four years and four months in prison.
“When you and him went out that evening, violence and death were the furthest things from your mind,” said Judge Gregory Dickinson QC. “You didn't intend to kill him. Part of the tragedy is that it's left to chance what happens. There will be a fight like this somewhere tonight and the person will get up and go home and the police will never hear about it.”
Humphrey’s attorney Robert Egbuna defended his client, saying that he was truly sorry for what he did.
“The defendant is genuinely remorseful about his actions,” said Egbuna. “He will never forget that day. As soon as Scott Humphrey heard about what had happened to Richard Rovetto, he was devastated. He has been very candid and admitted this offence from the very start.”
Still, Rovetto’s family doesn’t think four years in prison is enough time.
“This was a waste of a life,” said Jason Burley-Evans, Rovetto’s brother-in-law. “We feel the sentence wasn't the justice we wanted for Richard. He was a much-loved person and it will be hard for us all to move on.”
Rovetto, 29, was a father of one.
