A New York man has pleaded guilty to beating a transgender woman to death in 2013.

James Dixon pleaded guilty in court April 4 to beating Islan Nettles to death in Harlem in 2013, saying that he felt his “manhood” was threatened upon discovering the woman he was flirting with was born a man, says theGrio.

Dixon admitted to punching the 21-year-old woman to the ground after making passes at her and discovering she was transgender. He continued to punch her while she lay unconscious on the street.

Nettles was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was declared brain dead due to the injuries caused by Dixon. Three days later, she was taken off life support, according to DNAInfo New York.
