Curtis Lee Hampton is accused of murdering Monique Rakowski, 29, and their 13-month-old daughter Carmon.
Both mother and baby were found stabbed to death in their Eastepoint, Michigan, home on Feb. 12.
Hampton was formally charged with two counts of first degree murder, and Monique’s parents are prepared for the legal fight that lies ahead. “I’m a U.S. Army Veteran,” Sharon Rakowski told WXYZ. “This is going to be the hardest battle of my life and I’m going to win. I’m going to beat this bastard. He will not beat us. That’s what I have to say.”
Hampton has a history of domestic abuse, and in one case, Monique was the victim. The pair had been dating on-and-off for 2 years.
“It’s a thought that you don’t think can truly happen to your family and it’s been an emotional roller coaster for days because you go from not believing to grief and so to see him in person makes it even more real,” Monique’s cousin Emily Berry said. “The murder of child is completely senseless especially when it’s your own.”
Another cousin, who did not want to be named, added: "And if you can do that to your own child… what else are you capable of doing? What else?”
When Hampton appeared in court, he didn’t look at Monique’s family members. Hampton will remain incarcerated until his next court appearance in March.
