A North Carolina man has been charged with murder following the death of a 2-year-old boy he is alleged to have physically abused.
Christopher Sims, 25, had already been charged with felony child abuse after his girlfriend's 2-year-old son was taken to the hospital in critical condition on June 7, according to WBTV. The child was reportedly unable to breathe on his own when he was taken from the home by emergency medical staff.
Police were called to the hospital around 7 p.m. and were informed by medical staff that the toddler had suffered multiple injuries, including traumatic brain damage.
After interviewing Sims and the boy's mother, investigators determined the injuries occurred when the boy was alone with Sims.

At that point Sims was arrested and charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.
"The initial investigation has determined that the victim had been left alone with Sims during the time that the injuries occurred," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement, reports Charlotte Patch.
The charge was upgraded to murder following the toddler's death on June 8.

Sims is being held at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department and was scheduled to appear in court June 9.
Sims has been arrested twice before, reports WBTV. In 2016, an ex-girlfriend with whom Sims has a son told police he was harassing her with phone calls, text messages and social media. He reportedly contacted her 17 times in a span of two days. In the criminal complaint, the woman alleges that Sims said he was "coming for" her and their son.
The case was dismissed when the woman failed to appear in court.
The same woman alleged later that year that Sims broke into her house and "was attempting to take [their] son from [her] residence." She also accused him of following her and enlisting friends to surveil her home.
A motion to dismiss the case was granted by a judge in early 2017.
Police say the investigation into the 2-year-old's death is ongoing.

When Shakelia Brown came back from the interview, she says she found her youngest child, Karmen Tianna Lashay Brown, unresponsive, bruised and beaten.
Karmen was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead. Police were called to the hospital and Jamie was arrested on charges of felony child abuse and murder.
Jamie also had previous convictions for battery and drug use.
