A 30-year-old man reportedly beheaded a woman in her 60s – whom police say may be his mother – before taking his own life by jumping in front of a train last night on Long Island, New York.

The unidentified woman was found outside of her apartment building in Farmingdale at around 7:55 p.m. Police say her body was located on one side of the street and that her severed head was found on the opposite side of the street, reports the New York Daily News.

According to The Mirror, the unidentified woman had her head "kicked ... across a busy street."

The Metropolitan Transit Authority called police 20 minutes later to report that a man had jumped in front of a Long Island Rail Road train located about one mile away from the woman’s apartment.

Officials say they are treating the deaths as domestic incidents, reports NBC New York, and, depending on what they find, may consider this a family murder-suicide.

Several witnesses and neighbors reported seeing the woman’s body and thinking that it was a decoration related to Halloween.

“I thought it was a Halloween hoax,” said Jack Imperial, who was taking a taxi when he passed the crime scene. “There was no big splatter of blood. It looked staged.”

Several taxi drivers from Yellow Cab Corp. reportedly witnessed the body and are distraught over what they saw.

“One guy said he needs therapy now,” said the dispatcher. “They said it was one of the most disgusting things they’d ever seen.”

Police say they think the man killed the woman inside of her apartment, severed her head and then dragged her body to the street. A motive has not been identified.
