Man Arrested For Firing Shots At Alabama Police During Traffic Stop

| by Jordan Smith

Police conducting a traffic stop in Hoover, Alabama, were reportedly fired on five times by a man who later said he was “upset with his life.”

Martin Wood, 41, was driving a Nissan Xterra when he opened fire on the officers and the female motorist they had stopped.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on July 23.

“Fortunately this individual missed. He's driving while he's firing this weapon,” Captain Gregg Rector told WRBC.

Wood also told police he was “just being stupid.”

“There’s certainly no good explanation for Mr. Woods’ actions. He’s driving through one of the busiest intersections in Hoover and he decides to fire a gun at police officers and an innocent female motorist,” said Rector, reported AL.com. “He believed he could get away with it because the officers were tied up at the time. He obviously got more than he bargained for, as other officers spotted him immediately.”

“He did surrender peacefully. The gun was recovered from his vehicle,” Rector added.

Wood’s self-proclaimed act of stupidity is likely to have a high cost. Police have charged him with three counts of attempted murder.

“Our officers were just doing their jobs,” Rector said. “They’re certainly not going to tolerate insane criminal behavior.”

Rector added: "You know we certainly understand people have trouble in their lives. Most human beings don't use that or don't translate that into shooting at other human beings.”

A court date for Woods has not been announced.
