A 23-year-old man was arrested for murder Wednesday night after allegedly decapitating his mother at their home in Oldsmar, Florida.
According to WFLA, police responded to a call about a homicide and arrived at the family home at 7:24 p.m. Wednesday to find the decapitated body of 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne. Her son, Jose Gomez, was taken into custody and faces a charge of first-degree murder.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri claimed the murder was pre-meditated. Gomez had apparently been planning the murder for two days. According to Gualtieri's report, Gomez hit his mother with an axe before decapitating her and placing her body in the garbage outside their house. The body was discovered by Gomez's brother, Mario Gomez, who also was at home at the time of the murder. An investigation is still ongoing, but Mario Gomez has claimed that the noises he heard during the murder were the sound of his brother putting boxes away. Investigators have indicated that Gomez's motivation in the murder stemmed from his mother's "nagging" to carry out the chore of putting away boxes.
The responding law enforcement officials were notified that Gomez had left the house after committing the murder, and they ultimately arrested him several blocks away.
The Tampa-Tribune reports that Gomez was arrested in March for loitering and prowling. His prior arrest record also include charges of resisting officer without violence and disorderly conduct.
According to WFLA, a relative told NBC that she considered Gomez a “good person” who simply got plagued by mental illness.
