A 39-year-old man from Maine has been arrested for allegedly throwing his 3-year-old son down a flight of stairs.

William Lord Jr. of Wayne was charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence on a child less than 6 years old and domestic violence after police say he threw little Preston down a flight of stairs while the child was in a car seat at around 3:30 a.m. Monday, reports the Portland Press Herald. The suspect was reportedly intoxicated at the time.

“The baby was not secured in the seat and struck his head,” said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety. Preston reportedly landed face first after he was ejected from the seat.

The child’s mother, Ericka Melanson, reportedly brought her son to MaineGeneral Medical Center, where it was discovered he had fractured his skull. His injuries are not life-threatening, according to police. Melanson, 21, reportedly told police that Lord said their child deserved to be thrown down the stairs. She also said the man had recently been fired from his job and that she felt threatened by his anger and feared he was going to shoot her.

Lord reportedly went to bed after Melanson left their house to bring Preston to the hospital. Police arrested him at 7 a.m. Another child reportedly lived at their home, but was not harmed.
