| by Jared Keever

A Louisiana mother is behind bars after her 3-year-old child tested positive for high levels of cocaine, Baton Rouge police say.

Police were recently called to the Baton Rouge apartment of 25-year-old Megan Gaylord to investigate a disturbance call, WAFB News reports.

When police arrived they found the inside of Gaylord’s apartment “covered with dog feces, spoiled food, trash, dirty diapers and other unknown substances,” according to the arrest report.

While speaking with Gaylord, police noticed a “a strong odor of burnt marijuana,” according to a portion of the report quoted by The Advocate of Baton Rouge.

Police reportedly said the inside of Gaylord’s apartment was in such poor condition that they could not complete an investigation.

Officers called Child Services to document the home’s living conditions and reportedly called emergency personnel to transport Gaylord and her 3-year-old child to nearby Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

There, the emergency room doctor allegedly told police the child tested positive for high levels of cocaine. Gaylord is reported to have tested positive for cocaine, marijuana and other controlled substances.

Child Services took custody of the child.

Gaylord was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Monday and charged with cruelty to a juvenile.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office website indicates she is still in custody, and being held on a $7,500 bond.
