Police arrested a mother from Newark, New Jersey, along with her live-in boyfriend, in connection with the death of her 7-year-old son on Oct. 2.

Khadejrah Rawls, 28, and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Christopher Spearman, are accused of beating 7-year-old Michael Moore to death, WABC reports.

"[Rawls and Spearman] were charged based on injuries sustained by the child," explained Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, Newark Patch reports.

Police say they found the unconscious boy with broken bones lying in a bathtub early on Oct. 1.

They transported the unresponsive child to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later. The New Jersey Regional Medical Examiner’s Office have not released autopsy results, so the exact cause of death has not been confirmed.

Both adults are being charged with endangering the welfare of a child. Spearman also faces the additional charge of aggravated assault.

In addition to Michael, Rawls also has four younger children. All seven lived together in the same apartment, along with three pit bull dogs.

The other children are now in the care of child protective services.

Neighbors were upset after finding out Michael had died, but also said they had been suspicious Rawls may have been abusing him.

"He was a basically nice kid, a very handsome little boy," said Mareen Howard, a neighbor. "Played a lot with his little brothers... I don't know what happened. I wasn't there. I'm not going to speculate on that. The only thing I can tell you is that I'm very saddened about it."

Local residents have since assembled a makeshift memorial for the child they endearingly called "little Mike Mike," adding they miss having the boy hanging around the apartment complex.

Investigations are still ongoing.
