Luis Martinez, 51, was killed over just three months of rent for a few rooms in a Brooklyn home.
Martinez had reportedly been defending his sister Ana Rodriguez, who was renting out the rooms, and her children when he was fatally shot by their landlord, Phillip Estevez.
During the March 2013 dispute, Estevez short Martinez once in the chest, followed by “execution-style” shots to his head and chest, Gothamist reported at the time. He then tried to shoot Rodriguez and her children but his gun jammed. Estevez then reportedly attacked Rodriguez and her 12-year-old daughter with a pipe.
On June 1, Estevez, 65, was sentenced to 15 years to life for the shooting and assault, NY Daily News reported.
Popular VideoThis young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.
“Phillip, you should have listened to Luis when he told you not to do something you’d regret for the rest of your life and you shot him. That’s why you're there,” Martinez’s partner, Carmen Rodriguez, said in court.
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Albert Tomei called the whole dispute “sad.”
“A life was taken and yours is over as well, but that was your choice,” he said.
Rodriguez may have owed as little as $100 when Estevez shot her brother, Gothamist reported.
