Christian Choate’s stepmother, Kimberly Kubina, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the death of her 13-year-old boy. It is believed that the teenager died in April of 2009, after being kept locked up in a three-foot-high dog cage for at least the final year of his short life.
Kubina, 47, pleaded guilty to felony neglect. On Tuesday, Kubina said that she was “remorseful” for his death. According to The Huffington Post, in May of 2011, Choate's body was found buried under a thin layer of concrete in the Gary, Ind., mobile park that Riley Choate, Kubina’s former husband, called home.
An autopsy revealed that Christian Choate suffered blunt force trauma to his body, internal bleeding and a skull fracture before his death. The only reason that his body was found was because his older sister alerted authorities to what had happened.
Christian Choate was reportedly only let out of his cage to eat and use the bathroom. He was also often starved and beaten.
Kubina and Riley Choate both originally pleaded not guilty to all charges associated with Christian Choate's death, but that didn’t last long. Riley Choate made a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to some of the charges in exchange for a shorter jail sentence. As part of the deal, he was also able to avoid a jury trial. Last month he was sentenced to 80 years in prison.
As part of his pact with prosecutors, Riley Choate pleaded guilty to felony charges including neglect of a dependent causing death and moving a body after death.
It is believed that Kubina's plea deal, which included testifying against her former husband, was comparable.
