A Kansas teacher was suspended with pay after he was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm on campus at White Elementary School in Wichita.

The 31-year-old P.E. teacher, Daniel Nagel, was charged with a misdemeanor after another staffer saw him with the gun and called 911.

A spokesperson for USD 259, Wichita Public Schools, said the gun was not loaded and there was never any threat posed at the school.

The teacher has worked at the school for about five years. He was put on paid administrative leave while school officials investigate the incident.

A police spokesman said that even with a permit to carry a concealed firearm, it is illegal to carry a gun into the school. As a first time offender, Nagel could face a $50 fine.

One of Nagel’s family members told KWCH Nagel carried the gun in order to protect children and never meant to do any harm.

The fact that the gun was unloaded makes it unclear what Nagel intended to do with it.
