Jocori Scarborough Found Guilty of Raping A 15-Year-Old Classmate

A 15-year-old girl finally saw justice today after her rapist was found guilty. Jocori Scarborough, 18, was convicted on every count he faced, including second-degree rape, false imprisonment, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and disturbing or threatening a student.

Scarborough raped his classmate in a hallway at Parkside High School in Salisbury, Maryland while other students were in their 8 a.m. classes on May 5. "She said no,” Wicomico County Senior Assistant State's Attorney Karen Dean said in her closing statement. "She said no several times.”

The young woman, who will remain unnamed, took the stand during the trial. She didn’t scream when she was assaulted and tried to remain calm after the attack, but she broke down several hours later in the company of friends.

She later endured hours of police questioning and many community members publicly wondered whether or not she was lying. Scarborough’s DNA was found on the victim’s underwear and the jury deliberated for an hour and a half before finding him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sobbing echoed through the courtroom when all five guilty verdicts were read.

Scarborough’s defense attorney Eddie Gonzalez was unhappy with the result and felt the jury ignored certain facts. The victim was also uninjured during an attack, but a nurse testified that could be due to her young age.

Dean argued that the victim continued to pursue charges despite personal duress and faced the stigma of being raped and victim-blaming. The victim also had nothing to gain by pursuing rape charges.

Scarborough has yet to be sentenced, but he no longer attends Parkside High School.

Wicomico County State's Attorney Matt Maciarello said he admired the young woman’s courage to take the stand and pursue justice. He was also grateful for the efforts made by the prosecution and the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation.

"We're happy that we were able to achieve some measure of justice for her," he said.
