Innocent Man Ray Widstrand Badly Beaten Near Minnesota Home By Group Thought To Be Gang Members

A man who apparently was just trying to walk past a group of teenagers involved in a fight was attacked and is now is critical but stable condition.

Ray Widstrand was reportedly walking home to his apartment in Minnesota’s Dayton Bluff neighborhood when he came across 30-40 teens fighting in the street. He tried to walk through the crowd but was knocked to the ground, hit and stomped on and then left unconscious and bleeding on the sidewalk, according to KMSP-TV.

One man has been charged with aggravated robbery and crime for the benefit of a gang. Police have also arrested three teens in connection with the incident.

"An innocent man was walking down the street and brutally attacked by a group of youth," said Sgt. Paul Paulos, a police spokesman, reported the Pioneer Press. "He was out for a walk and decided to go through this group and was assaulted and knocked unconscious."

The county attorney's office said many of the fight's participants were believed to be members of the East Side Boys gang or its younger affiliate, Ham Crazy.

County Attorney John Choi vowed in a statement to prosecute anyone accused of taking part in the fight.

Widstrand’s father said his son had never "expressed any concerns" about the area where he lived.

"He loved where he found his apartment," said his sister, Alice Widstrand, during a news conference Friday evening at police headquarters. "He was excited about it. He was excited to have his own place."
