Parents are outraged a former special education high school teacher from California who admitted to having sex with five underaged male students was only sentenced to three years in prison.
Summer Michelle Hansen, 32, pleaded guilty in February to 16 felony counts. The counts included seven counts of oral copulation of a minor, six counts of statutory rape and three counts of distributing pornographic material to a child, NBC reported.
A plea agreement was reached in which Hansen would serve three years in prison have to register as a sex offender for life.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge Becky Dugan said she took into consideration the fact that Hansen admitted her guilt and that the mother of three had no prior criminal history.

“You’re a mother yourself,” Dugan told Hansen during her sentencing on April 3. “It’s beyond me to understand your behavior.”
Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Williams told the Press Enterprise her office did not agree with the sentence proposed by the judge, but she was pleased Hansen took responsibility for her actions.
Hansen tearfully apologized to the victims’ families while in court. She said she prayed for them every night and that she was “heartbroken,” KTLA reported.
“I’m not a monster,” Hansen said. “I made bad choices in life and for that I’m truly, truly sorry.”

But for the parents of the victims, the apology wasn’t enough and neither was the sentence.
A victim’s mother referred to the former teacher as a “predator” in court and accused her of stalking her children. She expressed her disappointment with the judicial system for giving Hansen a “ridiculously low offer.”
Another parent called the three-year sentence a “slap in the face” for all victims.
Hansen was arrested in June 2013 after a former student at Centennial High School in Corona made the stunning allegation that the teacher had sex with him.
Prosecutors said that the teacher had sex with students in her classroom, a school utility room, her car and at one victim’s home between May 2012 and 2013, KTLA reported.
According to court documents, Hansen had oral sex with a student in her classroom for Saturday school, sent students naked pictures of herself, and had sex with two students on school grounds.
Hansen, who was officially terminated by the Corona-Norco Unified School District following her sentencing, would have faced 13 years in prison if convicted following a trial.
