An Illinois man has been charged with the murder of an 18-month-old boy after the child urinated on him while he was changing his diaper.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Martin Alvarado Jr., 23, murdered his girlfriend’s son, Edwin Eli O’Reilly, in the town of Cicero, Illinois, outside of Chicago.
An autopsy from the Cook County medical examiner revealed the cause of death was due to multiple blunt force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide.
Alvarado was reportedly caring for the boy at the child’s home when he began to change his diaper. The child then urinated on Alvarado who reacted by beating the boy, police investigators believe.
Medical and law enforcement officials were called to the scene after the child was unresponsive. Edwin later died of his injuries in the hospital.
Alvarado has since recorded a confession on video in which he made several incriminating statements describing the crime.
An older sibling to the 18-month-old has gone to live with another family member, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Alvarado has been charged with first-degree murder and was due in court for a hearing on April 13. His hearing was delayed after he reportedly trashed his jail cell the night before.
