Homeowner Uses 'Bait Box' To Catch Package-Stealing Thief

An El Dorado Hills, California, homeowner resorted to unconventional methods to try and catch a thief who was stealing packages from doorsteps.

The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, had been experiencing thefts of packages left by mail carriers.

The local Sheriff’s Department was contacted, but had not solved the crimes, so the homeowner took matters into his own hands by creating a “bait box,” reports FOX 40.

“Last night I said, hey let’s put a empty box on my door step in front of my camera and see what happens. And uh, something happened,” the homeowner said.

Before leaving for a meeting, the homeowner set out a box with an Amazon label on his porch.

Within six hours, the package was stolen.

The homeowner was alerted by his home security system that the package had been taken.

“My security system emails me a snapshot of any movement in the front of the house,” the homeowner said. “I received an email with a person picking up the mail from my doorstep and also a picture of the car he drove onto my driveway.”

In the surveillance footage, a man in dark clothes is seen driving into the homeowner’s driveway, taking the package from the porch and driving away.

The homeowner shared the footage with El Dorado County Sheriff’s deputies and neighbors of the Creekside Community via their website, reports KCRA.

“I was like, wow,” said neighbor Nabanita Das-Sen. “I felt better because at least we have some pictures. We have the car and people can keep watch."

There have been multiple reports of package thefts in the El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park areas, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department. The cases are being investigated by detectives.

For this homeowner, he simply gets angry at the thought of holiday thefts.

“That just sucks,” the homeowner said. “So I just wanted to do something about it without getting violent, and I thought this would be the best way.”

The homeowner is hopeful that his “bait box” will assist the Sheriff’s Department's investigation.
