Kayla Mooney, 24, a high school science teacher at Danbury High School in Danbury, Connecticut, is facing second-degree sexual assault charges for having relations with a male student. She has also been charged with distributing alcohol to a minor, which is a misdemeanor.

After a seven-week investigation into her actions, she turned herself into police headquarters on the evening of March 31. She’s since been released from custody, but promised to appear in court on April 14.

"We are all very disappointed that this has happened to one of our faculty members," said Sal Pascarella, the superintendent of the city's schools.

Mooney was placed on administrative leave on Feb. 10, after the allegations surfaced. She remains on paid leave. Pascarella said the alleged incident happened off campus late last year, but declined to offer any more details.

"Obviously, there is a whole process we have to go through with this investigation," Pascarella said. "At this point, these are allegations.”

The student has not been named, nor has he been charged with a crime.
