Gun-Packing Grandma Lulu Campbell Wins Shootout with Armed Thieves

MACON, Georgia – Lulu Campbell, a 57-year-old grandmother, foiled a robbery attempt by two armed men by getting into a shootout with them and injuring one.  Campbell, who owns convenience stores and gas stations, told the Macon Telegraph she defended herself with the .38-caliber revolver she “always carries” when the attempted heist occurred outside her daughter’s home.

Lulu had just dropped off her 15-year-old grandson on Saturday, April 21, around 2:00 a.m., when the men approached her truck and one of them shouted for her to open the door and give them her money or they would shoot her.  That suspect was later identified by police as 32-year-old Brenton Lance Spencer.

“(The suspect) shouted, ‘Give me the (blanking) money and open the (blanking) door!’” Campbell told The Telegraph, describing her ordeal. “I said, ‘Oh my God, somebody is going to rob me.’ I said, ‘Baby, you’re going to kill me anyway, so I don’t have to open it!’”

Campbell said the man then fired at her but missed. She could feel the bullets zip past her chest, she recalled. That’s when she fired back, striking him in the chest.  The second man, who was later identified as Dantre Horatio Shivers, 30, then shot at her.

Campbell fired back, ducking down for cover inside her truck. Her silver Toyota Tundra sustained eight bullet holes in the hood and one in the grill, according to the report. Both front and side windows were blasted out.

The second man fled after she shot at him. “I thought that the only way to protect myself was to run him down,” she told The Telegraph. “Otherwise, he would have gotten away.” But, instead, Grandma decided to drive off and call 911.

Police say 32-year-old Brenton Lance Spencer has been hospitalized and was charged with aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery. The other suspect, 30-year-old Dantre Shivers, remains at large.

“I’m very nervous. I carry a gun all the time,” Lulu Campbell said.
