Gun Deaths in Indiana Surpass Traffic Accident Fatalities

article image

A new study conducted by the Washington, D.C., Violence Policy Center reveals shocking gun violence statistics from the state of Indiana. According to policy center research, in 2009 more Indianans were killed by gun violence than traffic accidents.

Those numbers place Indiana among an elite list of 10 states that have more annual gunshot fatalities than traffic deaths. The others are Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington.

A closer look at the recently published stats out of Indiana shows that 735 gun deaths were reported in 2009. That’s compared to only 715 deaths from motor vehicle accidents.

Nationally, the United States ranks among the worst countries in the world for gun violence, racking up approximately 31,236 firearm deaths in 2009. For comparison’s sake, the United Kingdom recorded only 42 firearm deaths in 2008 and 51 in 2007.

Apples and oranges. It's the same rehash of the same spurious argument the Brady Bunch tries to dump on the gullible every few years. For those of you who are factually challenged, THERE'S NO STATISTICAL CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TWO NUMBERS. 100% of dead people are dead today and will probably be dead tomorrow.

Since the data is based on 10

Since the data is based on 10 States, I think our usual pundits for the NRA need to start showing real statistics about the breakdown of the gun deaths, whether these were "accidental" shootings, suicides, etc. I believe in the right for people to responsibly own guns, but the NRA is way too extreme in its position. They'd like it if we could all have our own militias and anti-tank weapons and ICBM missiles to protect ourselves and our homes. That's how lunatic they sound.

Really, so explain to

Really, so explain to everyone again who has enough money to own, maintain safely, and use a nuclear weapon, oh maybe Bill Gates, but then that destroys your fantasy strawman arguement that has no relevence.

The measure of insanity, is how often one repeats a failed argument or solution, just like your lame childish strawman arguement of nuclear weapons ownership much less gun control reduces violence, LOL, never does.

Then again, we can review all of history of class 3 weapons ownership since the 1934 gun control act was put into law, and we see only 2 instances of registered class 3 weapons being used illegally, they were both police officers.

So we going to see you go all postal on line with insults and threats?

Past experience with gun control leaders such as Annette "Flirty" Stevens (Illinois Million Mom March president caught with drugs and a de-serialized handgun), Sheila Eccleston (Mothers Against Violence, imprisoned for possessing a sawed-off shotgun), James Kelly (Seattle Urban League anti-gunner caught brandishing a handgun during an argument), Bart Stupak (champion of mandatory federal trigger locks whose son later committed suicide with dad's unlocked gun), and Barbara Graham (DC Million Mom March activist convicted of a revenge shooting of an innocent person who HADN'T killed her son) suggests that frustrated gun control activists tend to go out with a bang rather than a whimper.

The moral is, if you ever happen to come across Dennis Henigan's and his minority few zombie followers of this world take cover. You don't want to be at Ground Zero when they go postal and its not a matter of if, its a matter of when!

Okay, since we're comparing

Okay, since we're comparing deaths by firearms to *accidental* deaths by automobile, let's try looking at the *accidental* firearm death numbers in Indiana. According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, in 2007,, the last year for which data is publicly available, there were 15, yes, 15 accidental firearms deaths in Indiana. Unless Indiana has suddenly become comparable to a post-Apocalypse sci-fi movie, it's pretty doubtful that the numbers have increased all that much in the past five years. This is especially likely given that motor vehicles accident deaths in that year, 942, are not all that different from the 745 recorded in 2009 according to the data uniquely available to the Violence Poverty Center.

Admittedly, again assuming that the VPC didn't simply pull its numbers out of thin air as they are wont to do, firearms deaths from all causes in 2007 were 670. So, driving has gotten safer but what were the causes of the majority of those *non-accidental* gun deaths?

Almost 400 (392) of 2007's "firearms" deaths were suicide. In other countries, the lack of a readily available firearm for that purpose is dealt with by the use of nooses, jumping from heights, the taking of poison, walking into traffic, and a variety of other creative methods. That leaves 278 to account for.

Five are listed as the result of legal intervention. That is, however, a bit misleading as the classification is given only if that's the determination of the police on the scene. Later findings are not included in that category.

Seven are listed as "undetermined intent." They can probably be included among the justifiable homicides. Of the remainder, 251 are listed as intentional and presumably criminal homicides. One hundred and fifty-four of those are listed as blacks, 19 as Hispanic, and 74 as Caucasian.

This then, should beg the question, is the problem guns or is it primarily young black inner city hoodlums shooting each other? Or, to put it differently, is the issue really gun violence? Or is it gang violence and a refusal to acknowledge that elephant in the room?

Anyone who'd like to do their own research on the numbers that VPC likes to toss around can do so at http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_sy.html

So Indiana has safe drivers!

So Indiana has safe drivers! I think thats commendable, but it has nothing to do with gun laws in Indiana. Take out the police shootings and self defence shootings. then your number might have relevence.
